Behind our NAIDOC Week art installation with Leah Cummins
In celebration of NAIDOC Week, Westfield Mt Gravatt has partnered with Indigenous Australian Artist, Leah Cummins, who has created a vibrant and bespoke digital artwork that will be transformed into an art installation in-centre.
Find the display on Level 2, outside Harris Scarfe, from Friday 5 - Sunday 14 July.
About the Artist
Leah Cummins is a proud Mayi Woman (Mayi speaking tribes), born in Cloncurry area from North Western Queensland and now living on Quandamooka Country Brisbane Bayside. In 2021, Leah started Bunya Designs following her passion to tell stories to the world with her art.
"I find inspiration in my cultural identity and bring my stories of my country and people to lift in my art. I paint stories of strength for women and children, love of the land and all my people. I pay respect to the ancestors who give me these stories in my creativity, to share my culture that transcends words and draws people into wanting to learn about First Nations people."
Leah paints both traditional and contemporary art using storytelling in every art piece to educate and teach everyone of her people's culture.
"As a proud Mayi woman from North Western Queensland, I want to share my love of art and interpretation of empowerment of my people."
About the Artwork
Country in Colour Blush
"Country in Colour is a piece inspired from the country we grew up on and the interconnectedness we share with our environment and how the country and land we live on is absorbed into our being and fibres. The variation of colours capture the many different colours we celebrate on country.
The Sky are our pathways to the next life, the yellow is the sun that shines through. The mountains are what shields us on our country. The people sit around in circles among the native foods on country.
As a proud Mayi woman from North Western Queensland I want to share m love of art and interpretation of empowerment of my people.
I want to share this piece with love and harmony." - Leah Cummins.
