    Computer Confidence

I've noticed that when he's on the computer, my brother takes in all the information and by persisting on a game, he learns how to concentrate. Even if it's reading a book online, he manages to take all of it in and becomes more confident of what he's doing.

    Computer Confidence

My 10yo son had access to my electronic typewriter before moving on to the computer. I find that I have gained trust and that he has learned a great amount of what computers are all about, which is beneficial for school. There are mums that are against their kids playing games (one mum had told me that she doesnt let her 10yo on the computer), but my son is a bright student who is social, happy and healthy. He even teaches me how to program and scan the computer for viruses. The computer is used for schoolwork (presentations and research) and playing games.

    Computer Kids

I introduced my 9yo to computers when she was 18mths old. She is currently a year ahead at school and loves learning. I have allowed her to have her own email which we set up for her together. It not only gives her computer experience but also the opportunity to write to me about things she wants me to know. Sometimes I send her educational emails asking her to correct my punctuation and spelling which she loves. She has just spent the last week away at her grandmother's during the school holidays. It was wonderful to receive emails from her each day updating me on what she had been up to and to see the photos she had taken and attached to the emails (which she taught herself how to do). She also emailed her 4yo sister (via my account) and it certainly tested my typing skills when I typed with my 4yo's response. My 4yo loves to play online games and cd-roms. Even my 10mth old like to tap the keys and point to pictures on the screen. If only my husband was as interested in learning to use the computer but my 9yo enjoys trying to teach him...lol.

I let my kids use the computer to access some very good web sites, such as 'ABC Kids', 'Happy meal', and some colouring website..., even 7,9,10 news. I create links that they can easily get on.

Always password the computer, and offer to log them on after they have had a run around outside.

Let them use a computer from an early age. They will learn and succeed - 2 of my children are now managers of stores and my son plays soccer for Australia. My other daughter is a leading team manager in IT. Give them space to explore and they will show you can trust them.

Some people may not agree, but I think you should let your child play games on the computer, educational ones, if you've got them. This improves their motor skills

I have created a few PowerPoint presentations, my son (16 months) loves to sit on my lap and hit the keyboard and watch the screen change. Not only does it get him use to using a computer, but its quality time spent together as we talk about the different things he sees on screen.

We read and play a few interactive computer learning programs (Alphabet Xpress and Cat in the Hat) and even find ourselves searching YouTube for some great Alphabet/counting videos (and some not so great of course, it's always the most annoying ones my son loves the most?). He has an interest in the computer and understands what the mouse does and puts in his CDs and he especially enjoys watching them because we watch them together.

Children that are not allowed computer time from an early age will be behind when it comes to school. To think that children 'do not need' to learn to use a computer from an early age is amazingly short-sighted. In today's work computers are every where - in the future there will be more advanced computers. Being computer literate is as important as learning to read, write and count. My son is nearly 4 and knows how to use a mouse, insert disks and do basic commands. I don't believe children need more than a couple of hours a week but to keep children from computers is totally crazy! These children will suffer in the long run.
