Sequins have been ‘in’ and ‘out’ of fashion faster than Britney Spears. Hugely popular in the seventies, and late eighties, sequins have in their time hit the fashion heights and led to multiple fashion felonies. But this time they’re back with a new sense of versatility and subtlety.
Out go the shouted statement pieces and in comes the understated complimentary piece. Don’t wear them as the base of an outfit but use them as a highlight.
And how to get back on the sequin wagon? Well at night it’s always been easy to infuse an outfit with sequins. Simply add a sequined top to a pair of jeans or dress pants. For those not wishing to add too much sparkle, a subtly embroidered blouse can have a minor sequined detail that will nod to the trend without selling your soul.
It’s more difficult to wear sequins during the day. But this season you can add a caffeinated kick to your Saturday morning coffee with decorated cardigans and T- shirts in casual colours like grey, white or beige. Plus sequins can be used to simply accessorise. Add a hint of Sienna Miller Boho with a thin sequined scarf over jeans and singlet. And at night create a little extra meow with a sequined shoe or bag.
Fashion Tip: If shiny sequins aren’t your thing, look for matt options. Metallic matt sequins have been seen on the runways and decorating dresses in FCUK and jackets in Armani Exchange over the past few seasons.
