THE 5 WARDROBE ITEMS TO TAKE YOU THROUGH TO SUMMER
11 August 2009

Attention all Recessionistas! Summer is looming and it’s time to think about your warm weather wardrobe. But what pieces should you keep wearing - or invest in now - to take you through to the next season? by FiFi.

1. The Peg leg/ Harem pants

Harem pants are at the beginning of their ascent on the Trends Richter scale. Keep your black peg leg pants from winter because they are the item du jour for summer. Not bought any yet? Invest in classic black or navy (the shape is over the top so no need for a crazy colour) and in a transseasonal fabric you can wear right now. Pivotal for summer you should always wear with outrageous heels….

2. A strong shouldered Blazer

A strong shouldered jacket is just at the start of its long trajectory in fashion. When the basic silhouette in fashion changes – such as peak shoulders - you know it’s here to stay. For summer keep wearing your blazer or buy another one in a lighter fabric to wear over your pretty summer dresses. Tip: You will learn to adore shoulder pads: what’s not to love about something that instantly gives you a smaller waist?

3. A sequin top

The sequin top looked great in winter because the unusual clash of sparkle back with textures like cashmere, tweed and wool. For summer that glitter top for day wear is still very important. Look for a sequin tank to layer over a white Tee now and come summer throw it back with shorts, denim, and pants. It’s an instant wardrobe updater!

4. A leather jacket

Leather is not something you automatically think is right for summer. And true, you won’t wear it on hot summer days but leather is a HUGE trend for next winter and not going anywhere. Heading into spring you should invest in a lighter, softer leather jacket in a more casual shape. Go for a light, fresh colour like cream, grey or taupe. A strong piece, watch it work wonders with everything you own.

5. Lace up brogues

Tottering around on outrageous gladiator heels has been great fun all winter but weren’t you pleasantly surprised when you slipped on your lace up brogues? For summer wear this man style shoe with pretty and feminine floral dresses, shift dresses, flirty skirts and short shorts. These shoes are only at the beginning of their fashion life so invest now to get years of wear. Your feet will thank you. And so will your Physio.

TOP 20 STYLING TIPS
22nd June 2009

Below are 20 of some of the best and most practical styling tips which you, our dedicated users, have sent us recently. Write these down as I am sure you'll be referring these next time you go shopping - they are gems!

1. I always loved Chanel’s advice, remove something before leaving the house....  Stops you overdoing it and making your look seem effortless. Jacqui Keogh

2. Always have a pair of slim leg black pants in your wardrobe. They can take you from work to an evening out just by accessorising! Anne-Marie Coughlin

3. Always wear one of your best outfits shopping. If what you’re trying on isn't an improvement don't buy it! Olivia Keliher

4. Icons are remembered in black and white so buy EVERYTHING in black and white then punch it up with sexy, crazy metallic and earthy accessories. Jodi Hutchinson

5. Learn what clothes accentuate you body shape, adding colours that illuminate you skin tones and accessorise with the latest fashion trends. A complete package! Cathy Vesty

6.  The best styling advice was from my mum who told me to always have a little black dress as part of my wardrobe. Cecilia Tatarchuk

7. Always check how it looks from the back as well as the front. Kathryn Nash

8. To have 4 or 5 classic pieces in my wardrobe and to buy new season pieces to mix and match with them. Jill Zobel

9. If you are showing lots of leg, cover up our cleavage more. If showing off your cleavage lower the hemline, or risk looking cheap! Fiona Blyth

10. Shape, not size! Always dress for your body shape. Tweak the latest styles to suit the rules for your shape and you’ll always feel chic.Michelle Way

11. Build your wardrobe around a few classic pieces. Meredith Cross

12.  Ignore the size on the label (and you’re larger than wanted hips); it is more important that it fits stylishly and it zips! Fiona McKenzie

13. Focus on one loved thing on your face (eg eyes) when doing makeup. Not on every, not a good look. And try new things no matter how old you are. Michelle Forbes

14. To accessorise, you don’t have to have a lot of money, accessories can make all the difference to personalising an outfit and defining your style. Claire Sloan

15. Keep your hair well cut and coloured so you feel good about yourself every day. Nancy MacAlpine

16. Never compromise on bag or shoe quality – even bargain clothes are lifted by great chic accessories. Leanne Bree

17. Buy undies a size up because they fit smoother and don't give you a digged in line. Kim Gumz

18. The best advice I have ever received is from my mum (via Coco Chanel) who says that you should wear white close to the face!! Claire Cato

19. Don't let someone selling you the item of clothing to help you decide if you need it. If you're undecided, go home and if you think about it, that you can't live without it - then it was meant to be. Nicole Johnson

20. 5 key points:
a.  K I S S  =  Keep  It  Simple  Stupid
b.  Purchase Quality not Quantity
c.  Always wear Quality shoes and handbags
d.  Get a good haircut
e.  Keep makeup subtle and natural

WINTER ACCESSORY ESSENTIALS
7th May 2009

Need to know what shoes, bags and accessories to buy for winter? Take inspiration from the Autumn/Winter 09 Collections and hit the shops…

What: THE BAG
Which:
This season your bag should be a shoulder bag. If you are made of money you can buy every colour. On a budget? Stick to classic versatile black, brown or grey. It should have one shoulder strap, probably a chain strap. Which could be in gold, silver or resin. Think 70’s. Think classic Chanel. It should be in a casual square shape, or it can be slouchy and unstructured. Not too oversized or too small. It can be in an interesting texture like snakeskin. It can have hardware like, jewels, zips, studs or quilting. But my advice: keep it simple for day and go for jewels at night.
Why:
Because we love to toss a bag on our shoulder with our hands free (carrying a tote in the crook of your arm is so Paris Hilton). Because a shoulder strap loves your new power shoulders and it will never slide off. Because an unstructured, slouchy, casual shape is much more versatile than a lady like shape that looks oh-so-formal. Because in this economy, it’s time to shop in your own closet and a fabulous bag will detract attention away from your bland, non de la non wardrobe.
Wear: If you are spending money, any money, you want a bag to go places. More bag for your buck. It has to be versatile. A casual shoulder bag will work with everything: wear it with baggy boyfriend jeans and your leather jacket on weekends. Toss it on with your Lanvin architectural little black dress at night. Wear it with your sharp shouldered blazer and harem pants. Take it to work and give it its own desk.(it can be your new PA).
Where:
First
Bally, Chanel and Louis Vuitton (soon to be at WBJ)
Business:
Mimco, Wittner, Cue, Oroton
Economy:
Witchery, Sportsgirl, Equip, Target, Portmans

What: THE SHOE
Which:
Shoes have gone crazy this season. So mad they need therapy. That’s the good news. You want platforms, tassles, studs, patent, patchwork, bright colours, metallic, T-bar and heels so high you need a step-ladder to climb into them. If you had to invest in one pair what do you want? Go for a major platform with a thin heel. Keep away from wedges unless you spend more on your physio than your shoes. You want a round toe. Pointy is OK if they are Balenciaga. Pointy cheap shoes = cheap. Go for black for versatility but with shine or texture like pony skin or snakeskin. You want shoes that are over the top. Shoes that shout and make a statement. You want shoes that talk more than you do. Don’t do heels? Stay at home or go for ballets flats or lace up brogues.
Why: Because hot, sexy gorgeous shoes will instantly transform last season’s wardrobe into right now fabulousness. Because as you get older (Sorry to swear at you), you can rock outrageous shoes even if you can’t rock short skirts. Because next winter’s runways were littered with high heels (and models falling off them). Meaning? These heels are just peaking on the groove Richter scale so you won’t waste your money investing in them now. Because shoes always fit. Because when it rains your high platforms keep your feet dry.
Wear:
Don’t buy fabulous shoes to hide them. Wear with short, crop, peg leg pants. Wear with a flirty skirt or a dress. Wear with baggy boyfriend jeans rolled up at the ankle. Wear with chinos, with skinny jeans, with a pencil skirt. And may I remind you that you can wear open toe strappy heels with black opaque hosiery. That means wearing heels from summer to winter. How clever. Wear with a pedicure. Wear with a car and driver. You won’t be walking anywhere.
Where:
First:
Hugo Boss, Bally,
Business:
Mimco,Country Road, Gary Castles, Midas
Economy:
Betts, Mollini, Zu shoes, Novo

What: THE ANKLE BOOT
Which:
We have seen it looming on the fashion radar - now the ankle boot is hot, hot, hot! It should have a round toe but it could be pointy if it has a serious platform. Go for classic colours like black, brown and grey. You are not going to wear hot pink or red boots. Ever. You want a platform with strong heel. It could be a cone heel, a chunky heel or a stiletto heel. You might like a few studs or zips. They could have lacing up the leg. Go for suede, patent or snakeskin. Keep it strong and simple.
Why:
Because when trousers, dresses and skirts get shorter the shoes turn into short boots. Because they are perfect for an Australian winter. Because they will add a sexy fashion edge to everything you wear. Because we don’t care if they cut your leg off and make them look shorter. It’s fashion. And we love it.
Wear: With flirty skirts. And short sexy dresses. Toughen up soft pretty haute hippy dresses with a shot boot. Wear with a pencil skirt and a leather jacket. Wear with cropped peg leg pants or rolled up jeans. You will never wear these under your jeans. It’s not about hiding the boots. It’s about flashing your new fabulous purchase. Wear with black opaques.
Where:
Business:
Aldo, Wittner, Urban Soul at Myer,
Economy:
Wanted, Tony Bianco, Scooter shoes, Mollini

What: THE LONG BOOT
Which:
You want long boots this winter. They could have a chunky heel or - here’s the good news - they could be flat riding boots. They should be in classic colours like black or brown. They should have around toe. If you are feeling daring, go for over the knee boots. They were all over the runways for next winter and will be hot, hot, hot! (They will also be Hot if you live in Sydney). You want boots that are simple and understated. You might like a buckle here or there but keep away from too many zips, tassles or studs.
Why:
Because there is something very laid back about long boots with a pretty dress. Because sometimes you have to walk places. Because when skirts and dresses start to shrink then boots get longer. Because sometimes you might want to keep warm.
Wear: You want to wear flat or high boots with short mini skirts and pretty dresses. With knee length, flirty skirts. Flat boots and pencil skirts don’t work. Don’t worry about matching boots to bags. Mix it up! Don’t wear long boots under jeans. This is punishable by law. You may tuck your jeans into your boots if you have to. Tip: Be careful wearing military jackets and boots. You might look like you are Adam Ant. This is not a good thing.
Where:
Business:
Gary Castles, Wittner, Country Road, Edward Meller
Economy: Mollini, Novo, Diana Ferrari in Myer

What: BIG JEWELLERY
Which: This is not a season for so-small-I-need-glasses to see jewellery. You need big, bold and over the top. Just like your shoes. You want chunky embellished cuffs in strong architectural shapes. You want big knuckle buster rings. You want amazing, oversized jewelled necklaces or piles of long strands of necklaces. You want bangles to stack up your arm. You want silver or gold. You want anything that is going to make an impact.
Why:
Because strong, sharp shouldered clothes can handle strong accessories. Because one amazing piece will instantly update everything. Because there is something defiant (and joyful!) about wearing over the top jewels in a down turn. Because jewellery with personality will do all the talking.
Wear:
With all your favourite wardrobe basics. Wear an amazing jewelled necklace with a pretty feminine dress a la Burberry, wear a stack of leather cuffs peeking out from under your blazer. Wear piles of long gold necklaces over a poets blouse a la Givenchy. You can rock big jeweled earrings a la Prada. Wear lots of big rings if you have nice hands (and wear long gloves if you don’t). Tip: Keep the focus on one area: Love a big necklace? Ditch the cuffs, and the earrings. Keep it simple. Keep it clean. The over top, extravagant pile-it-all-on-look was fabulous in the Louis Vuitton show. But that was on the runway. And you are not a model. Sorry.

FIFI'S WINTER WARDROBE ESSENTIALS
1st May 2009

Need help planning your winter wardrobe? You have seen the trends, you know what's hot but what items do you actually really need to buy? What items should you really invest in? With an eye on the big trends for next winter let me present the key pieces for winter. In these tough economic times you need to be strategic with your shopping. These are the essential items of the season whatever age and whatever budget.

What: THE SERIOUSLY SHARP SHOULDERED TAILORED JACKET

Which: If you have been living under your Missoni blanket you might not know the big news of the season: shoulder pads are baaack. Stop the screaming: pick yourself up off the floor.  Shoulder pads are your new friends and you will learn to love them. Because this time around they are sharp and seriously tailored. A jacket with this new and exciting all important shoulder detail is all you need to buy. Look for anything with pronounced shoulders. You want it in classic black, navy or grey. I am scared of a bright coloured jacket with shoulder pads. Go for gabardine, wool, velvet, leather or stretchy cotton. It could be a tuxedo style jacket. It can be double breasted or single.

Why: Because every couple of years there is a new change in the silhouette. And we haven't seen a defined shoulder since you were born. Because it's time to say good bye to loose, baggy look... Because a sharp shouldered jacket will do incredible things to your waist. It will make your hips look smaller. Because this piece will INSTANTLY! (faster than twitter) update everything you own. Because it's so totally versatile. Because it's thrifty to invest in the beginning of a trend. Buy now and get years of wear. Because it's so hot and fabulous.

Wear: With everything. It will love to be seen with all your clothes. Even the daggy ones. Wear with your favourite peg leg harem pants and a simple tank. Slip it over a pretty BoHo luxe floral dress. Love it with skinny black jeans. Wear it over a statement LBD. Add structure to a flirty skirt. Wear over a bright Body Con mini 80's dress. Wear with your new Lanvin chain strap shoulder bag: it will now stay put (and not keep sliding off your shoulder). Add your favourite Monster heels... and skip out the door.

Where: Willow, Country Road, Scanlan and Theodore, Bettina Liano, Max and Co, Witchery, Sportsgirl, Cue, Mango, Cotton on, French Connection.

What: THE FAKE FUR VEST

Which: Another item to instantly update your wardrobe. You want a Fur vest this season that is probably Faux. (I'm not sure what I think about real fur.) Keep the shape simple. You want an easy shape and no crazy accoutrement like studs, straps or glitter. It might not even have buttons. You want dark colours like black or brown.

Why: Because it's perfect for trans-seasonal weather: We don't need full length fur coats here. Because it's all about a Talitha Getty and Miss Haute Hippy of the Jet Set look. Because this little piece of furry glamour will add sexiness to any old daggy thing you throw at it. Recessionistas rejoice: you don't need to buy anything else to razz up your wardrobe. Because it doesn't need ironing.

Wear: This vest will work with your entire wardrobe. Scientific tests have proved it. (This is a guarantee and you can return with a full refund.) Wear this over your poet's sleeve blouse, with peg leg pants. Over a simple neat knit and with high waist pants. Wear with skinny jeans and your monster heels. Wear this belted over a floral dress, over your LBD, or with a simple knit and jeans. Wear this to chic dinners, to casual weekends away, to breakfast over your silk Dolce & Gabanna Pyjamas.

Where: Country Road, Arthur Galan, Scanlan Theodore, Jigsaw, Sussan, Wish, Cotton on, Review, Decuba, Forever New.

What: THE STATEMENT TROUSER

Which: Trousers are back big time. Perhaps you didn't know they ever left? Bless. Once you get them on again you won't want to take them off. The good news? There are so many great trousers shapes out there even YOU will find something to suit you. Yes, even you. The hot shape is the cropped peg leg with a high waist. Don't roll your eyes. They have front pleats a la 80's and surprisingly this is a flattering cut (and will cover up those almond croissants sitting on hips). Otherwise go for high waist trousers with a wide leg or spray on skinny cigarette leg. Go for any fabrics that please you: wool, leather, satin, denim or crepe. You can even call them pants. Tip on length: It's about showing off your fabulous stomp-a- licious heels so they should stop above or just at the ankle.

Why: Because suddenly trousers look new. Because anything with an YSL 70's feel looks right. Because you have been wearing dresses for so long you forgot trousers ever existed. Because they work so well with your sharp jacket and your fur vest. Because trousers will effortlessly go from day to night in a switch of a shoes. Because we love table top dressing: keep it simple on the bottom and just change your tops. Because you are so sick of shaving your legs and worrying about your unsightly ankles. Because in winter you like to keep warm.

Wear: The coolest look anywhere would have to be the harem pants back with a sharp shouldered jacket. Just remember that when your trousers are baggy your top should be sharp, and tailored to balance out the shape. There is no need to look like an easter egg. Wear with a fabulous Louis Vuitton Obi belt, wear with a wide stud belt. A short jacket works with high waist pants and shows off your amazing waist and curvy silhouette. Wear with your Killer heels: you want to show them off any chance you get.

Where: Wayne Cooper, Country Road, Camilla and Marc, Veronika Maine, Portmans, Cue, Sportgirl, Kookai, Cotton On

What: THE STATEMENT DRESS

Which: You want a dress that is grown up and chic. You want a dress that makes a statement. It's about a strong sculptural shape. It's not about a loose, sack. It should have a waist. It should be flattering, feminine and show off your figure. It should hit the knee but it can be shorter. Under no circumstances should you wear anything mid shin. You want a dress that has long covered sleeves: (on all the runways for next winter). You want a dress that is a standout. It can be luxuriously draped, in a bold bright colour, or in small floral print. It can be in a dramatic print. Tip: the one shoulder dress will continue to be a big trend next season.

Why: Because it's fail safe. You can wear it anytime, anywhere. Office, Opera or out on the weekend. Because it's timeless. Because we are addicted to the easiness of a dress. Because pretty and feminine will always be on trend. Because you don't have to think to get dressed. You just throw it on, climb into your shoes, grab your bag and walk out the door.

Wear: Under all your winter coats. With black opaques and your Monster vs Alien heels. You can cinch in a pretty dress with a mean stud belt. You can add structure to a drape dress with your favourite sharp jacket. With accessories you can add fabulous chunky cuffs or a jewelled necklace to a simple dress but keep away from outrageous accessories when wearing a print. it's not Christmas and you are not a tree.

Where: Willow, Arthur Galan, Country Road, SABA, Veronika Maine, Witchery, Sussan, Portmans, Sportsgirl, Target

What: THE FLIRTY SKIRT

Which: This season you want a skirt can swooshes and swirls. It should be pretty and feminine. It should be sitting on the knee. It could be narrow and then flip out. It can be in a soft fabric that moves when you walk. It can be in chiffon (and nearly sheer) lace, wool or satin. You want details to make it a little unexpected: a ruffle, pleats, paneled or it could be tiered. It should be in dark colours which makes it versatile and a go to piece every day.

Why: Because your new power sharp shouldered jacket needs a little softening. Because a skirt is a great alternative if you are not a dress person. Because a skirt is a great mix and match item you can have fun with. Because it's trans-seasonal: wear now with a leather jacket and into summer with a singlet top.

Wear: With a flirty skirt you need a narrow top to balance out the silhouette. Wear with your new sharp shouldered jacket. (Over a simple white Tee or a simple grey round neck sweater.) Wear with a simple knit and your new faux fur vest. Toss on a long line knit cardigan, belt it in and let your pretty skirt peek out from under it. Wear a flirty skirt with a tough leather bomber jacket to soften it up. Wear with belt to cinch in the waist. Wear with your stomp-a-licious heels or boots.

Where: David Lawrence, Arthur Galan, Jayson Brunsdon, Nicola Finetti, Katies, Witchery, Sportsgirl, Cue, K-Mart.

TIP: Other wardrobe mainstays: The leather biker jacket, a pretty blouse, a peacoat, a military coat, a sequin top, a jumpsuit.

INSTYLE'S TOP WINTER TIPS
20th April 2009

InStyle’s fashion director Katherine Green has just returned from the Milan and Paris fashion shows. Each season she sees everything designers have to offer, from bargain chain-store pieces to luxe designer wears. Here she shares her tips for the winter season ahead, the Australian designers to invest in right now, and tips to help you build a classic wardrobe that will see you through all occasions.

Q. What are your favourite trends in-store this winter?

I love the modern minimalism/ power dressing trend that is so huge this season. Especially the jackets and tops with accentuated/bold shoulders. I’m also loving clean-cut, simple winter coats, and leggings worn with sporty statement heels. On the accessories front, it’s all about structured bags with hardware detailing.

Q. Which is the key piece to invest in for this season?

Without a doubt, I would definitely say a blazer. Make sure you try on a few styles to figure out which cut looks best on your body. The two styles that are everywhere this season are the sharp cropped blazer, and the more relaxed boyfriend style.

Q. What are the 5 pieces every woman should have in her wardrobe?

1. A well cut pair of black pants - it’s better to go for a slim leg
2. A navy blue blazer - this is great for the office and also worn with jeans on the weekend
3. A white shirt – a classic piece that will definitely earn it’s place in your closet
4. A beige trench-coat – belt-it up for an instantly chic, pulled together look
5. A jewelled, sequined skirt, cardigan or dress – to be worn for a glamorous evening look, or to add interest to a simple work/daytime outfit

Q. Who is your favourite Australian designer and why?

I can’t answer that! This changes every season. This winter I love Therese Rawsthorne for the perfect little black dress; Arnsdorf has great denim and fabulous shirts; Carla Spetic has incredible knits and coats, and Josh Goot is my go-to for sexy, figure-hugging dresses.

Q. What fashion item can’t you live without?

That would definitely be statement belts....I belt almost everything I wear!

Q. What are the best accessories to invest in?

Invest in a qualitybag that you will love for ever, and special jewellery that will one day become an heirloom.

SALES SURVIVAL TIPS
19th December 2008

Sales! Sales! Sales! Need some expert tips to help you get through the crowds looking for the best bargains? Here’s a true fashion insider guide to surviving the upcoming summer sales. By FiFi.

  • Think about what you need in your wardrobe before you leave the house. Work out where the gaps are and what is missing in your wardrobe.  Then make a list and be sure to stick to it.
  • Think about your style and what works for you. If florals are not your thing and never suit you they will not suddenly look fabulous just because they are half price.
  • Plot out a path. What shops you want to go to and where. Plan what direction you will take rather than rambling aimlessly around the stores. Time is money.
  • Shop early. Throw down a strong latte and hit the stores before the crowds get pushy.
  • Dress for comfort. Dress for easy undressing. Wear clothes that are easy to take off and on. Repeatedly. That in itself is exhausting.
  • Let your feet do the walking. Wear comfortable flats. (Then throw heels in your handbag to try on when you need them).
  • Wear decent underwear. There is nothing, and I mean nothing, more embarrassing than being seen in bad, sad, saggy, underwear.
  • Remember cheap clothes + cheap colours = Cheap. And who wants to look cheap? (Cheap colours are hot pink, fluro yellow and lime green).
  • When something is cheap go for expensive looking, classic colours such as chocolate brown, black, navy and caramel.
  • Think trans-seasonal. Can you wear it in summer and winter? Choose fabrics that can go the distance: light weight wool, cotton, chiffon and silk. It’s all about layering and you will get more mileage out of your wardrobe if you can wear pieces from season to season.
  • Check the tags. Does the garment need to be drycleaned? If it’s white and will get dirty easily you will pay more on cleaning it than wearing it. Put it back. Walk away.
  • Examine all the items before you buy them. Are there any buttons missing? Big fat holes? Zippers not working? Make sure you know what you are paying for because you can not generally return sale items.
  • Always carry cash as some stores may not use credit cards.
  • Think about what’s hot for next season and if what you are buying will still be in fashion. What’s in for next year? Look for black, strong sculptural shapes, graphic prints, pale colours, a narrow silhouette, tailoring and lace. Keep away from anything seriously boho. It’s a NoNo. Think sharp not sloppy.
  • When trying on clothes always check out the view from behind. Throw a mirror in your handbag. You need to know if you have a bulging muffin back and a visible panty line.
  • Remember friends don’t always tell the truth.  Take someone you trust for honest opinion. Even your husband.
  • Try not to be whipped into a frenzy. Think about it (see above) and stop at impulse buying. Buyer’s remorse is not a good thing. The wrinkles and the Botox will cost more in the long run.
  • Stick to a rule. Don’t um and ahh if it’s under $30. If you love it, then buy it, wear it, thrash it and say goodbye. But remember when you buy 10 things at $30 that adds up to $300. Which is ONE Miu Miu shoe…...

THE RACES
27 October 2008

Tips to look your best at the races.

1. WEAR A HAT
Spring race wear is all about The Hat. It’s a NO NO to go to the races without a hat. A big, broad brimmed hat that sits on an angle is always flattering. Or try a 70’s style floppy hat, a trilby or a fascinator that makes a statement. Keep away from small, little fascinators. They are definitely not fascinating. Go for a hat that tones in with the rest of your outfit. If you have a dress with a lot of bright colours and prints then go for a simple hat in one colour.. Conversely if you have a simple outfit you can go for a more outrageous multi coloured hat. Keep away from felt hats which are too wintery. Don’t wear a lot of jewellery with a hat. Get rid of earrings, or huge necklaces. Go for simple cuffs, or stacks of bangles up your arm. Don’t wear over the top sunglasses. Keep it simple. That hat should be the focus.

Where to Buy: Remember you don’t need to spend a fortune. If you are on a budget head to Portmans for their cute little miniature top hats that sit perched on the side of you head for $39. Or head to Country Road for their 70’s straw hat and buy a pretty flower brooch to attach to it. Head to Saba, Bardot, Cotton for cute trilbys and try Portmans, Sportsgirl . Mimco and Witchery for cute hats and fascinators.

2. WEAR A DRESS
A dress is perfect for the races. It’s the season of The Dress so there is an incredible selection of dresses in every store. The only problem? Deciding which one is for you. From over top graphic prints, to pretty floral or chic, simple black the choice is yours. But beware there are a few rules. Keep away from anything too short, too flimsy and anything with too much cleavage. Don’t wear anything that reveals too much flesh. No midriffs or cutouts. It’s not tasteful. Keep to a dress that is knee length or just above. No Maxi dresses. Please. No evening dresses with sparkles. And please nothing see-through. Think about the weather. It might rain so always have a chic stone trench or a jacket at hand to throw on.

Where to buy: Head to Cue, Veronika Maine, Saba, Witchery, Jigsaw, Country Road and Morissey for fabulous dresses.

3. WEAR SHOES THAT DON'T SINK IN THE GRASS
Shoes with a heavy or wide chunky heel are hot right now and they are ideal for the races. Go for wedges, platforms or any shoes that are tough and add an edge to a pretty dress. Pointy toe stilettos will just sink in the grass. And they are so out of fashion they are nearly back in. Go for bright colours or patent black. Or try heels in a pretty flesh pink. It’s all about the statement shoe this season so don’t hold back. Be adventurous especially if your dress is simple. Don’t worry about matching shoes and bags. Please don’t wear flats unless you have a good excuse. Please don’t wear thongs. Please don’t wear sheer flesh coloured pantyhose. Go for bare legs or wear black opaque tights worn with peep toe heels- it’s chic de la chic.

Where to buy: Head to Nine West, Mollini, Midas, Mollini and Wanted for fabulous shoes at great prices.

4. CARRY A SMALL BAG
An oversized clutch or shoulder bag are both perfect for the races. You don’t need or want a big oversized tote. Too cumbersome and too big to lug around. Go for a chic, 70’s style shoulder bag with a chain strap or a simple clutch you can simply tuck under your arm. A small little box clutch is also right. A bag in a bright colour, in patent, or with interesting texture and hardware will add va va voom to any outfit. Again don’t worry about matching bags and shoes. And don’t worry about matching your bag to your hat either. As long as it all tones in together you will be the picture of style. A good rule of thumb is to stick to 3 colours. More than 3 is very tricky and 2 can be too matching. Black and white always looks chic but break it up with a dash of red with a bag or shoe. You will be a winner!

Where to buy: Head to Oroton, Mimco, Midas, Country Road or try Equip for the cheap but chic option.

THE DRESS
17 October 2008

What: THE DRESS

Why: Because the dress is the only thing you want to wear this summer. Because this season it’s all about the new femininity and is there anything prettier than a dress? Because a dress is so versatile you can take it from Day to evening in a flash (just by switching accessories.) Because it takes 2 seconds to throw on in the morning. And that makes it a no-brainer.

Which: You need 3 dresses this summer:

1. The Little Black Dress:
Everyone needs a little black dress. It never goes of style. That’s why they call it a classic. Look for a simple shape, a flattering cut and stick to knee length because that makes it versatile. Layer it over white shirt for work, take it out at night by throwing on a statement necklace or try the little black dress with gladiator flats for a casual weekend look.

2. The Long Floral Maxi Dress:
This is the hot piece for summer and it’s something we haven’t seen in years. We love it. It’s easy to wear, covers up white lumpy legs and there is nothing like a pretty floral print to perk up the day.But this dress comes with instructions: Never wear with heels. It’s flats or nothing. Please don’t wear this to the office. Please don’t wear this shopping (14 yr olds are excused). This dress is for the beach, the pool or the backyard BBQ. Keep it simple and forget about jewellery. You may add a chunky brown plaited belt. But remember all that floral is a statement in itself.

3. The Bold Bright Shift Dress:
You need a bright dress in a bold colour. It will pop out of wardrobe and bring a smile to all your black. Think of it as you would blank canvas. Then throw on fabulous chunky beads, stacks of bangles or keep it simple. Unadorned. Stick to knee length and go for a simple shape. You don’t want anything too frou frou. Why? Because Ruffles and pleats might be all the rage but they Make accessorising tricky. Throw on clashing wedges and a bright bag. Mix up the colours. Have fun. Isn’t that what dressing is all about?

Q&A: WHAT YOU'VE ASKED
1 August 2008

What's What have collected some of the most popular questions and relating answers, tips and tricks from our professional fashion stylists. Read on to gain helpful advice that will make dressing, be it for day-to-day or a special event, so much easier and enjoyable.

CATEGORY: FIGURE FIXERS

QUESTION: I am short (5'1) and a size 12 and have trouble finding a look that suits me, any ideas?

ANSWER: The key to dressing when you are shorter is to give the illusion of height through your clothes. You can achieve this by wearing coats, skirts and dresses with a hemline no longer than just below your knee, anywhere in-between this point and your feet will make you appear shorter. The same rule applies to pants - cropped styles will also have this effect while pants with a wide leg that end as close to the floor as possible teamed with a heel will make you appear much taller and leaner. Cropped cardigans and jackets will highlight your waist and elongate your legs. With patterns and prints, choose delicate smaller ones over big and bold as they will be overbearing. And make sure your clothes fit you well- if they swamp you they will just make you appear shorter!

QUESTION: I tend to find almost all pants gape in my lower back. I would love to know of some inexpensive pants that fix this. I have also recently had a baby, so my tummy is not all the fab at the moment either.

ANSWER: Go for a high-waisted style pants. Not only will they hold in your tummy but they are cut to fit your waist as opposed to your hips so they won't gape! Almost all of the retailers are carrying a high-waisted style at the moment so have a try of a few to see retailers cut suits you best.

QUESTION: I'm a column and need advice on how to make my waistline look narrower (smaller) than my hips and existent as I don't have one. Thanx for the help.

ANSWER: There are lots of things you can do to create a more curve at the waist. Wearing belts at the waist over cardigans, jumpers, coat and shirts is the most obvious way. Other ways you can try are wrap style tops and dresses, pleats and gathering at the waist on tops or dresses and jackets that fasten low with a single button and tops with sash details at the waist.

QUESTION: I love belts however I don't seem to be able to find ones that suit me. Is it my body shape or am I not finding the right ones? I’m a cello.

ANSWER: Being a ‘cello’ means you have a short waist, so opt for a thin belt to accentuate a longer waist by wearing it lower on the waist (not under your bust). Avoid big belts are they will only make your waist look shorter. Look out for textured belts such a patent, metallic or snakeskin to give your outfit an edge this season. To eliminate the fuss of wearing a wearing a belt, try wide-waisted dresses with halternecks. The wide waist band/cummerbund will visually lengthen your waist, whilst the halterneck will lift your breasts. Check out Events, Ojay, David Lawrence, Country Road and Myer.

QUESTION: I have put quite a bit of weight on in the last year around middle, also have a 36D bust, what costume should I be looking for?

ANSWER: Choose a halter neck one piece cossie in a single black or a lively floral print with a dark background. Black is super slimming and the floral will distract from body flaws. The halter neck will support your fuller bust and enhance your cleavage appeal. Go for a swimsuit with gathered fabric in the midsection to reduce the appearance of bulges and create the illusion of a defined waist. Look out for matte fabric and avoid shiny metallic fabrics. Check out Seafolly, Jets, Cheetah, One Teaspoon at David Jones and Basque at Myer.

QUESTION: I’m a column with an average stomach and an average bust. I’m looking for swimwear, but not a one piece, that will look good on my figure?

ANSWER: Being a “column” you are perfectly proportioned, so you don’t need to play down any part of your body! Take advantage of strong blocks of colour and have fun with it, so enhance your curves with boldly contrasting asymmetrical patterns. Halter neck or bandeau, are flattering styles for you. Look out for ruching, gathers and padding to create cleavage.

QUESTION: What shoes would go best with a cream lace dress? Im hoping for some shoes which will add youth and fun to my outfit. Hopefully a bright colour?

ANSWER: I love serious heels with a cream lace dress. You can do a bright colour like red or go for black patent which is a hot look for summer. Platforms or wedges are the shoe of the season. You want to break up the prettiness of lace with a more hard edged shoe so go for gladiator style or anything with interesting details such as studs and lacing. Anything in shiny patent is important and anything that adds a tough edge looks young and fun! Try Mollini, Shoobiz, Nine West, Betts and Zu for some fabulous heels.

QUESTION: My whole life I have had to live with these big muscular calves. I have always wanted to wear boots, and after reading Trinny and Susannah they suggest long boots are a must for thick ankles and big calves (my problem) however where do you find boots that cater for large size calves? I have tried on many and the widths are just not wide enough.

ANSWER: Try the Airflex range at Betts as they often do a wider calf. Also try Target, Tony Bianco at Myer, ZU and Diana Ferrari. If you are still having problems take them to a boot maker as they can often re-shape them to fit your leg.

CATEGORY: SPECIAL OCCASSION

QUESTION: I am 43 and going to a family wedding in Melbourne in September. I have on lay-by a very simple pale pink silky dress and matching jacket. It looks like an outfit Audrey Hepburn would wear. I have a pair of silver grey evening sandals and matching bag already at home. I am clueless with clothes and usually buy something black which I am sick of wearing. I am also suffering midlife crisis. Do you think this outfit will be OK and can I wear sandal toe pantyhose or are they too tacky. I really can't afford to buy more shoes or bags. What jewellery should I wear with it. The jacket has a very simple diamante clip-no buttons.

ANSWER: If Audrey Hepburn would wear it you can't go wrong! To lift the lightness of the pale pink and silver accessories, choose pewter or charcoal jewellery like a diamante cuff or a statement necklace. You can pick these up fairly cheaply from shops like Diva, Equip or Portmans. I would ditch the pantyhose and get a lovely manicure instead. Have a great time!

QUESTION: Can you please help, i have 4 days to get organised for a friends wedding! I haven’t exactly been hitting the gym, and I’m in great need of a "black" dress if you get my drift!. I’m size 12 and quite short.

ANSWER: The LBD - the undisputed must have for every women's wardrobe! Check out some hot styles from Myer & DJ's like Karen Walker - she has a hot style in silk taffeta you can look great in. Or if you are on a budget, check out Cue, Country Road, or even Portmans, which have great dresses in store now. To make that the most of your LBD, check out Diva - they have the most amazing costume jewellery that will complete the look at faction of the price. Hot new peep toe pumps from Wittner or Mollini will polish off the look.

QUESTION: I have a design interview and a fashion dilemma. My previous work clothes are either too causal or tailored and stiff. What’s the perfect classic combo?

ANSWER: For any interviews the first rule of thumb is to look neat, clean and tidy. Clean shoes, clean short, nails and clean neat hair. For a design interview you want to look funky and chic but you also need to look responsible, professional and to be taken seriously. I would suggest that you try a pretty full 50's style skirt but forget the petticoat! Go for black. Wear with a chic little denim blazer or a plain black blazer. Go for heels or flats in a colour but whatever you are comfortable with. Try a simple white Tee or a knit under the jacket and add a belt in patent. Go for dark colours like black , brown and navy. Head to Veronica Maine or Portmans for skirts, Witchery for a denim blazer and you will find some great knits in Cue.
