Choosing the right Makeup Colours for your Skin Tone

Four time Australian makeup artist of the Year, Rae Morris shows us how to choose the right colours for our skin tone.

Emma Watson: Cool

If you have a cool skin tone like Emma, a slight pink undertone to the complexion, combined with warm hair and dark eyes then Rae’s tips for this look are perfect for you. Balancing both summer and winter, warm and cool is the way to go.

Note the makeup Emma is wearing suits her to a tee because she has chosen tones in the brown family that are neutral – avoiding orange (very warm) and pink (cool). The balance and versatility of these neutral shades are a godsend for anyone with this combination. Go for neutral, and you can’t go wrong.

''Mahogany brown'' is a good example of a neutral colour - think the shade of  ''teak'' wooden furniture with a plum kick to it. On her lips Emma is wearing a wine red, which she also carries on to her cheeks and this is the perfect colour to compliment the neutral tones used on the eyes. Opting for mahogany, wine and burgundy shades for your makeup palette as well as your wardrobe means you’ll always glow!

Jennifer Aniston: Warm

We can’t copy that gorgeous, medium-tanned skin, those cool blue eyes or that hair that would bring a tear to any wig-maker’s eye but we can copy her makeup - something else she always gets right. The great thing about Jen is that she clearly knows what suits her. She knows which beauty choices take her from sexy to smoking, and she works that look perfectly.

Here her lip-colour, a warm nude, is a great choice. Nudes have a slight peach or orange undertone, and this works wonders on pale eyes and a tan. If you consider your eyes your best facial feature, then guard this tip with your life: choose makeup colours that contrast with your eye colour. Jen’s bronzed cheeks and lips perfectly oppose the blue of her eyes, making them pop, then all she needs is some subtle charcoal pencil smudged around her lash line and lashings of mascara to finish off the look. Simple = simply stunning.

Marcia Cross: Cool

There are two types of redheads and it is important that you know which one you are: warm, or cool?

Marcia is a cool red. But why? Yes, her hair is a beautiful, warm red but her eyes are a pale clear blue and her skin tone is extremely pale, without the slightest hint of gold. Like Jen, then, Marcia also suits bronzey tones around the eyes to highlight the blue. The rest of the makeup for a cool redhead, though, should remain as soft and natural as possible.

Warm redheads, with more gold in their skin, freckles and darker blue or green/hazel eyes, should also avoid bright colours like blues, yellows and pinks. Again, soft is better and so opt for lip colours that are as close to your natural lip colour as possible.

By no means should you cover your freckles! Simply even out your skin tone with a good foundation to remove natural redness is all you need. For the cheeks, go with a soft peach hue, and stick to soft bronzes, greys, charcoals and even soft violets for the eyes.

Jennifer Lopez: Warm

J. Lo is a classic warm tone and she needs to keep to a palette of medium to dark eyeshades. Icy pink and dusty blue tones are a massive no-no unless you are trying to channel L’il Kim! A hint of violet, however, can work beautifully. Drawing the focus to the eye, along with a dark rim works very well and complements those gorgeous, dark eyes.

Go for a warm blush and choose a nude lip colour that is halfway between your skin and lip colour. This will add definition and bring just the right amount of colour to lift your skin.

A bronzer is also a winner on dark skin as it adds just the right amount of glow and shimmer, as opposed to the orange effect it can have on paler skin (Tara Reid? No need!).
